After 6 months of meticulous development, we're thrilled to announced the beta release of AI powered descriptions for Power BI Documenter. Available to all users, this will allow you to generate documentation for both business and technical users at the click of a button.
What is it?
AI powered descriptions leverage advanced AI and large language models (LLMs) to automatically generate detailed, plain language descriptions and explanations for DAX expressions and Power Query queries.
This means clearer, more accessible documentation that caters to both business users who seek simple insights and technical users who require in-depth explanations. Bridging the communication gap between developers, analysts, and stakeholders, this empowers teams to work more cohesively and efficiently.
Why is it important?
This feature is a game changer for teams working with Power BI and Analysis Services.
Here’s why it matters:
- Faster documentation: By automating the generation of descriptions, Power BI developers and analysts can focus more time on building and optimising models rather than spending hours on documentation, helping to keep projects on time and within budget.
- More effective collaboration: Clear, tailored documentation improves understanding across various roles, leading to efficient handovers, better decision-making, easier approvals and streamlined development processes.
- Institutional knowledge captured: One of the biggest issues with documentation is that it's often out of date, or doesn't exist at all. By leveraging AI, you can ensure up-to-date, consistent documentation is available, meaning that you're able to build trust in your reports and models.
Overall, this fosters better collaboration, aligns technical solutions with business needs, and aids in making more informed decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
How does it work?
We believe in working smarter, not harder. Just connect using our external tool or upload your PBIT file, and your report and model metadata is instantly organised in a user-friendly format that greatly enhances your documentation.
Once your file is uploaded to Power BI Documenter, follow these quick steps:
- Select an object.
- Choose the description type from the new information panel
- Click Generate.
- Select Replace current description.
- Click Save.
